Most of us spend our lives carrying meanings that were never truly ours. They were handed to us by family, culture, fear, and experience, and over time they became the lens through which we saw ourselves and the world around us. We mistake them for our own, never realizing that they quietly built a sense of self we never consciously chose. Real change begins when we reclaim the right to define our own meaning and allow the borrowed ones to fall away.
This borrowed self can never truly feel at home because it has no substance of its own. It survives only by constantly searching for itself through thought, anticipation, memory, and comparison. It is not a solid thing but an absence, a hole surrounded by thinking. Like a black hole defined only by the stars orbiting around it, it appears real only because of the endless activity that keeps it alive.
This structure is sustained not only by thought but by behavior. Our habits, reactions, and compulsions continually reinforce the meanings we inherited. The visible supports the invisible. When we stop acting from those old patterns, the deeper structure begins to weaken. The subtle slowly starves without the gross that once sustained it.
Perhaps this is why the world itself begins to change. The world appears through the outline of the self we take ourselves to be. As that borrowed self loosens, the world quietly reveals a different face.
