The Channels We Carve: Habits Set Grooves That Shape Life’s Flow

You don’t kill. To think we can kill is arrogance. Life cannot be killed—that’d be contradiction in terms. Life is immortal, indivisible, indestructible. It is always flowing and growing. What we actually do is only channel or block it, at least in appearance. We redirect its flow.

How are these channels created? Through repetition, through patient and persistent shaping. Once a channel is formed and the water begins to run, the task becomes easier. Water finds its own way and flows. That is the power of habits and systems—they redirect the course of life toward our ideals and values. But if the channels lead toward darkness, God forbid, the current becomes very hard to stop. Life will flow there as readily as anywhere else.

Life itself does not discriminate. It stands beyond good and evil. It gives itself generously to all—the thief, the murderer, the saint. That is why we must be careful about the channels we carve. Once the water has found its direction, halting it is almost impossible. Almost.

What can be done then? You cannot dam the river outright; the force is too strong. But you can open small side channels. Not drastic, but slight deviations—just enough to draw a little water aside. Then another branch with a slight deviation from the first one, and another, each pulling the stream little by little away from darkness. In time, the course begins to change.

So don’t rush into new habits without thought. And for the old ones, don’t exhaust yourself trying to block the flow. Don’t fight darkness head-on. Instead, look toward the light, and keep carving, bit by bit. Life will do the rest.

Every habit you repeat is a channel you carve. Choose them carefully. If you find yourself caught in a dark current, don’t waste your strength trying to stop it all at once or swim against it. Instead, begin with one small new habit that tilts you toward light—something so simple you cannot fail. Keep at it, and over time the flow of your life will follow.
