The Primordial Ignorance: Subject-Object Duality

Object and the knowledge of object are one and the same.

Thus, object is knowledge-of object, that is: Object is of the nature of knowledge.

Subject is the knower of object; therefore, subject is nothing but an occasion for knowledge. But subject is itself an object because as it is something known: Subject is known as the knower of object; and insofar as it is something known, it too is a knowledge-of subject. Thus, subject is of the nature of knowledge.

There is nothing that is not knowledge: The knower and the known are both of the nature of knowledge since they are what they are insofar as they are known as what they are known to be. What is is knowledge, or knowing pure and simple. In other words, Being and Knowledge are identical.

In the final analysis, there is no knower; there is no known: There is only knowing.

In light of the above, universal manifestation is “The Being of Knowing” which is identical to “The knowing of Being.

Being and knowing are one and the same. Subject is an occasion for knowing while object is an occasion for Being. The supreme identity is the realization of the identity of the two complementary poles of the universal manifestation, subject and object. This is the aim of all Yoga.

  1. Does this mean that if we are being, we are knowing and vice versa? The implications of this understanding are awesome to me because I think that means that there is no real stress regarding “knowing” or “being”? If we focus on consciousness of every moment then we are knowing and being. Of course this doesn’t mean that no one studies anymore but with a whole different set of priorities. Whoa. Huge. Thanks Toomajj.

    1. Thanks for the nice comment; yes, it is exactly as you say. Our being is a knowing and vice versa. And as you say it has great implications because it says that we are fundamentally what we consider ourselves to be and not something fix imposed by outside or society. Literally if we consider ourselves free and happy, and do so always, we are free and happy. If we change our knowing of ourselves then we change our very being. And this is peculiar to human constitution since its essence is divine, thus it participates in divine will and infinitude. For a long life we have simply accepted what we are told to be; but if we keep telling ourselves differently, then we would be different. I love this since it gives me a deep sense of freedom and peace, that I am essentially none of the things that limit me. 🙂

      1. Okay. I’m just abiding with this understanding. This is so hopeful and well… deep(sorry) that it may take me awhile to understand ALL the implications but I am excited at the prospect. I pray that your holidays are all that you desire.

    2. A fascinating thing is that this principle is at the heart of quantum mechanics. All the strangeness of quantum world comes from the idea that “objects and our knowledge of object are one and the same.”

    1. Dear Partha thanks for your comment. You know I have been thinking a lot that I have been an Indian in past lives, and that in this life too I should have been born in India; I don’t know what bad Karma I had that put me in Iran! There is not a single molecule in me that identifies with country and culture and people of Iran.
