You Are Pure and Infinite

Man is like a galaxy; at the center there is the black-hole, the divine center, whose infinitude keeps the whole constitution together and functioning. There is also the rotational motion producing a centrifugal force that constantly throws the galaxy out of itself. Rotation of the galaxy is the sign of its life; it is the cause of its separation from the central source,  for what throws a center out of itself is its rotation. Thus, rotation symbolizes The Fall. In the absence of rotation the galaxy collapses onto itself, into its central black-hole. However, it is the destiny of a galaxy to collapse onto its own center, to return to the origin.

It is not that human has undergone The Fall; the human state is The Fall. Life is the separation; the purpose of life should be the realization that separation is a separation in name and form only, that it is illusory; we are essentially never separated from that which constitutes our essence; we are not human in essence; we are essence in human.

When water is boiling droplets are formed jumping up and down at the surface. Human life is like the life of these droplets that are momentarily separated from the source but are always on their way back to the source: They arise from the source and go back to the source. When the droplet falls back into the water it is no more a droplet; there are no droplets in the water; there is only water, an indivisible whole. The cause of the existence of droplets is the boiling which signifies the divine ecstasy necessitated by divine infinitude. It is the task of man to realize that though he experiences itself as an isolated droplet but his essence is water: The droplet is water but water is not the droplet. Droplet is water constrained in space and time; it is its name and form that separates the droplet from the water. Thus, separation is always only in name and form; its essence always remains water. The goal of spiritual life is to transcend the names and forms and to realize the essence. This realization is the necessary and sufficient condition for universal peace.

Realize your essence, whether by love and devotion or by sheer force of the intellect. Reflect on the fact that why we feel good when we love but feel uneasy when we hate! Isn’t it because what we love and what we hate is essentially a part of ourselves, the universal Self?! Love is always love of the Self; hatred is always hatred toward the Self. And above all, knowledge is always Self-knowledge.

Ignorance is the root of all evil. Ignorance is not lack of literacy as knowledge is not the insatiable accumulation of mere information. There is more evil among today’s educated men than among yesterday’s peasants. A knowledge that leads to arrogance and a sense of superiority and entitlement is not true knowledge, for outward arrogance always reflects the inward ignorance. True knowledge is the knowledge of the Supreme Identity, that we are essentially united in our divine essence. Ignorance is not knowing that we are all one and the same.

When it comes to man whose essence is divine there is no gift better than true knowledge, for human knowledge, insofar as it is knowledge of absolute truth and not contingent fact, can unite all that there is. But at the same time there is nothing more dangerous than human ignorance, and this too is because of man’s divine essence, for man’s ignorance is in a sense god’s ignorance; nothing is more dangerous than an ignorant god since it has the totality under its spell. Imagine how destructive can a drunken god be?! Thus, if man’s knowledge can unite all that there is, man’s ignorance can destroy all that there is, and both in virtue of his divine essence. Realize that you are God in human disguise and throw away the petty desires and attachments; you are pure and infinite; nothing and no one can hurt you because there is nothing but you: You are all that there is.

  1. Excellent post Tomaj. Something seems profoundly true that we simply feel better when we love. It resonates, when we manage it – but it seems there is always some measure of initial resistance, at least in my experience.

It is powerful to realize, there is nothing that can threaten our existence.

    1. Thank you Tony. That’s very true. Whenever I have fear or anxiety or worry when I analyze it I realize it is produced by my own ideas and thoughts of reality. There is only the contents of my own consciousness that produce the emotions, etc. I see there is nothing but the contents of our own consciousness. Its our choice to make it work for us or against us. I too find this a very powerful and liberating attitude that helps me a lot.

  2. I would like to hear some of your ideas about the various paths we take to truth. Do you think truth has more than one form?

For example, a lot of your thinking resonates with me; you write lucidly, at a high intellectual level, I find none of it threatening. But there are many people, with a sincere desire to understand the nature of existence, that could not possibly grasp these existential ideas in the way that you understand them.

Is our individual understanding of truth limited by our fear? Our mental capacity? Our education? Are we only able to grasp what we are ready to hear?

    1. Dear Tony thank you for the comment; it is a very crucial point you brought up which I should learn to incorporate in my own writings. About truth I believe truth is one or else it would not be truth; but this one truth is inexpressible because it is transcendental; none of us in human form can grasp it; but truth find many forms to be understandable for us. So I do believe truth has many forms while naked truth is itself formless. The personal God of religions is one form of it; the Krishna or Rama of Hindus is another; in fact it takes as many forms as there are people; so there are various paths and all end up to it as long as the person wants to know the truth. From my own experience what limits us in understanding truth is usually ourselves; I too believe truth is inside us; we are it; but our own ideas and notions about reality and truth keep us from seeing it. I am sure that one need not know anything whatsoever in order to know the truth; it is not our mental capacity at all; we are all equal in the face of it since it is our own essence. The block is always our own notions and ideas; it is even more accessible to people with less ideas in their heads; this is realized when one has a direct perception of formless truth which is absolute possibility for all.
But truth takes many forms depending on the temperament of the individual. Hinduism has a nice classification of different temperaments and the paths appropriate for them. I personally cannot relate to the personal and God-like aspect of truth; I am by temperament a metaphysician and you seem to be too. So we naturally approach it this way and it can be realized by this path too. I could not follow the other paths but I felt I have the right to know it and this is my temperament; in religions like Islam there is usually aversion to metaphysical paths; all should follow one paths, which is false. And many used to think that intellect cannot grasp truth; only love can. This too I realized is not true. Intellect can as well as love, but I can’t love god so I try to know the truth 🙂
This path that I follow is called Jnana Yoga, or Yoga of knowledge which goes the way of the intellect. But its main method for approaching truth is letting go of false ideas of it one by one until no ideas are left; then truth is realized and a direct perception is possible. So truth is not a matter of belief or faith; it is and it should be a matter of direct perception which is known as Transcendental Experience. So my choice of path is only because my own inclinations. At the end of all paths pure knowledge and perfect love become one where subject and object merge. See that perfect love and pure knowledge both are defined as the condition in which subject merges in the object.
I hope I answered your question, but if not please feel free to continue this thread; I really enjoy our conversations.

      1. Yes, you answered my questions clearly. Thanks for your thoughtful response, this is very much in alignment with many of my own views, although my thinking is not as well developed as yours – at least not yet.

The notion of the transcendental seems to be a key in this arena, yet it is the most slippery for me. I am always looking for tangible mental hooks I can grab to clarify my perceptions. At this point, I’m thinking music may be a common example of a transcendental experience, in that we all experience the same melody, but I suspect we hear it differently. I’m still trying to get a handle on it in my head.

I very much want to believe there are multiple paths to the same place, any other position seems intractable. But at the same time, on the level of form, it seems multiple paths can take on conflicting values – but maybe that is just the ego, or judgement in play, I don’t know.

I’m still trying to figure out what enlightenment looks like :).

You are a brilliant guy; thanks again for taking your time to respond to my child like notions of truth.

      2. Thank you Tony for your very kind words 🙂 Your questions are really important and relevant and I enjoy them since they clarify things for me. Regarding transcendental, though it is used in many contexts with different meanings but its precise meaning and the one that relates to experience of truth is a notion in contrast to “natural.” Natural experience is experience as we know it; it is subject to space, time, and causation. There is no experience that we have and is not subject to these categories, even dreams. Although we may fly in a dream but we are still in a space, with a time and subject to sequence of causal actions. What is known as enlightenment or awakening is when we are somehow able to gain a transcendental experience; transcendental experience is an experience not subject to space, time, and causation; and for this reason it is not really a human experience; it is the moment where our human ego dies that we have that transcendental experience in which we realize our divine nature, or pure consciousness. That transcendental experience since it is not subject to space-time it is not in any form anymore, and hence it is the same for all agents who have it; that is why and how the descriptions of mystics of it all over the world are very similar. It is in that experience that we realize we are not really human, that this whole world compared to that state is just a dream. To make it precise, it is the moment we wake up from this reality. That is transcendental experience which is really a new kind of seeing, and unfortunately there is no way to imagine it or understand until we actually have it.
There is a specific method that takes you there though it may take a while and go through some technical philosophies. It is called “transcendental reduction.” It is the method by which we make ourselves wake up from this thing we call reality. I might have written a post about it.

  3. So, even in our present form as droplets we are not separated from Source? We are Source so separation is not possible? Wow! You take on such important topics and ideas then describe and explain so well.

    1. Thanks 🙂 It is as you said; our separation is only apparent; it is only in name and form; but in essence we are not separated. The droplet is still water. When we realize the truth and have a direct perception of it we see that we have always been in it and with it and one with it; we only failed to see it. It is an aha moment in which we wonder “How could I not see it!” It is always with us.

  4. I love reading your words because it’s like reading my own thoughts. This essay brought to mind this poem, I wrote years ago. Enjoy. I am all that is/if nothing else be/in the cold solitude of night/I still have me./I am all that is/my heart soars on the wind/to seas unexplored/to lands lushly, richly green/to people poor of plenty./I am all that is./One atom turning and stumbling/across the axis of this greedy earth./I eat the soil/swim in the air and my roots/reach toward the sensuous sun/I am all that is/a simple flower/smiling in the sun’s warmth/shivering in the wind’s wrath/resting in the cool shade/of Life’s tall tree./I am all that is/When I see you/I see me.

  5. it is even more accessible to people with less ideas in their heads; proof to your statement is Fakirs and Bhakthas. in very recent times one Nisargadutta Maharaj author of I AM THAT (compiled and edited by Miguel-Angel Carrasco) is essentially illiterate.
